Victim advocate: Jail escapee's girlfriend probably fears for her life

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC)-The victim's advocate for the Mt. Pleasant Police Department said Friday that the girlfriend of a man who escaped from the Berkeley County Detention Center on Thursday most likely fears for her life even though she has been taken into protective custody.

James Sanders, 39, was being held on criminal domestic violence charges when he escaped from the jail Thursday afternoon.

"First thing I thought about was where is the victim?" said victim's advocate Donna German. "I imagine she's in fear for her life because victims of domestic violence, it now only affects them physically, but they got a lot of mental problems."

German encourages domestic violence victims to get an order of protection from a judge. The order is in effect for a full year, and requires the abuser to stay away from the victim.

Laffey leaning on its side nothing to worry

Laffey leaning on its side nothing to worry

A piece of U.S. history is back home, but it's going to take a little time before the USS Laffey is settled into her new spot.

During low tide, the destroyer may look like its leaning to its right side, but she's in no danger of rolling.

Officials say it's just a matter of time until the hull makes it's own trench in the sediment bottom.

"It's going to take a few cycles of the tide going in and out, for that mud shelf to be pushed into position, and for the destroyer to settle out into a nice level bathtub of it's own," said director of operations Bob Howard.

Officials say that process should take about a month.

Man sentenced to 35 years for killing man in Mt. Pleasant home invasion

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A judge sentenced 22-year-old Adrian Beaton to 35 years on Thursday for murder, kidnapping, burglary in the first degree, and assault and battery with the intent to kill for his role in a home invasion which occurred at Marsh Oaks Apartments in Mount Pleasant in March 2010.

According to court documents, Beaton entered Jose Contrerras' kitchen window on March 1 while Contrerras slept in his bedroom. Beaton then let his accomplices in the front door.

Mr. Contrerras was awakened by the men who demanded drugs and money. The men bound Contrerras' feet and hands with phone cords, and he was forced to lay face down on his bed while his apartment was ransacked.

Contrerras was shocked with a taser gun and also received injuries when Beaton hit him in the head with a pistol.

Beaton put the gun to the back of Contrerras' neck and threatened him as the men searched the apartment.
