Cops: Man caught huffing before and after Mt. Pleasant wreck | News
MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC)- A 24-year-old Mt. Pleasant man was arrested late Wednesday afternoon after authorities say he was spotted huffing Dust-Off before crashing his car into a ditch, and again after the wreck.
Kirby Donald Burkholder was arrested and charged with reckless driving, inhaling aromatic hydrocarbon, and expired tags.
Police say Burkholder was spotted by witnesses driving slowly down Mathis Ferry Road around 5:19 p.m.
A witness told police Burkholder was slumped over his steering wheel as the car went off the side of the road, drove down a steep embankment and crashed into a ditch, nearly colliding with another vehicle in a nearby parking lot.
According to an incident report, a witness who went to check on the suspect saw Burkholder trying to inhale hydrocarbon from a dust off can. The witness took the dust off can and keys from Burkholder, who then got out of the car and tried to take them back.
Police say Burkholder did not know how he got in the wreck, and claimed he drove into the parking lot using the driveway. He also told police everyone was yelling at him for no reason.
When asked how his car ended up wrecked in the ditch, police say Burkholder claimed his car was sitting in a normal parking spot.
The report states Burkholder was unsteady on his feet and his pupils were "pin point" when he was initially interviewed, but he grew steadier and his pupils returned to normal as the interview went on.
Police say there was a receipt in the car showing a three pack of compressed air cans were purchased just 15 minutes before the wreck.
Burkholder was taken to East Cooper Hospital for treatment, and then booked at the Charleston County Detention Center. He was issued a $940 bond during a hearing on Thursday.
