Must-have local apps and must follow Facebook, Twitter pages | News
Live 5 News has run stories all week about mobile apps, Facebook, Twitter and other forms of new media. In our final TECH U report we want to fill you in on some great local options available to you.
If you have a smartphone, you probably already have several useful apps, but here are a few local apps you might find handy. If you're a Charleston Riverdogs fan, download their free app for live radio broadcasts, video highlights and team profiles.
If you're at the game, enter your seat number for the nearest concession stand or restroom. You can even play noisemaker sounds straight from the app to cheer on the Riverdogs.
If you're heading downtown after the game, you need to have cocktail compass. This app shows you the nearest bars and nightlife spots. After a long day at work, find the nearest happy hour location and call a cab for a ride home, all with this free app.
CHS Walks is another popular app when navigating around historic downtown Charleston. Get a self-guided tour of all the best tourist spots with photos and detailed information. The app is free with an option to pay five dollars for GPS navigation.
Looking for a place to eat? Then download Urban Spoon. This app will search nearby restaurants by price and type of food. Can't decide? Shake the app and it will choose for you!
Once you find the right spot, download the open table app and book your reservation. You can also search nearby restaurants and browse available reservation times.
There are literally thousands of pages to choose from on Facebook, but here are a few local pages you might find useful. The Facebook page for the Charleston area convention and visitor's bureau is a similar page that is also worth following.
Make sure to follow Carolina Night Life which focuses on bars and restaurants, showcasing special promotions and photo albums from a night out on the town.
If you're looking for a weekend away, check out Charleston Travel Tell's page for special offers. Over 145,000 people are following. And lastly, the Facebook page for Charleston County Parks and Recs fills you in on family friendly events and news going on in your neighborhood.
